No “Room for Rent” in Illinois Family Budgets

Chicago, IL – Juggling monthly bills is getting tougher for Illinois families. A new report from Housing Action Illinois shows that making enough to pay the rent on an average two-bedroom apartment means making more than $16 an hour. With the state minimum wage at $7.50 an hour, many families are paying a higher-than-recommended percentage of their income on rent.

Mimi Chedid with Housing Action Illinois says that puts people at high risk for homelessness, especially with other costs for food and transportation rising fast.

"You're one emergency, one sick child, one problem away from losing your home. A lot of Americans live that way."

Chedid says there's been a persistent shortage of affordable rental housing in Illinois.

"With the looming recession and the mortgage foreclosure crisis, there's a lot of people that are going to need housing, and a lot of these people are going to shelters."

The report calculates the "housing wage" under the federal guideline that says people should not spend more than 30 percent of their income on housing, including utilities and insurance. In Chicago, the "housing wage" is more than $18 an hour.
