Virginia Children Win on "Idol Gives Back"

April 10, 2008

Norfolk, VA - A share of the money raised through the "Idol Gives Back" project, part of the popular "American Idol" television show, will help fight child poverty in Virginia. The Children's Defense Fund (CDF) is among this year's recipients. CDF spokesperson Ashley White says that will mean big benefits for many local kids.

"In Virginia in particular, one in eight children are poor, and a baby is born into poverty every 24 minutes. So hopefully, the funds that CDF is receiving through the 'Idol Gives Back' charity will help us sustain and expand our work to ensure a level playing field for all children."

CDF is one of several U.S. and international groups that White says will benefit greatly from the generosity of 'American Idol' viewers.

"The audience for the show supports promoting people's best and giving them the best opportunities to succeed in life, and the Children's Defense Fund, like many of the other nonprofits involved, wants to lift every child out of poverty and give them the opportunity to succeed in life as well."

White says CDF would invest the proceeds in programs to ensure health coverage for children, end childhood poverty, and cultivate youth leadership.
