Portland, OR – Retirement means a whole different thing today than it did to past generations, and a new organization in Portland is prompting Oregonians to do a better job of planning for their golden years. "Life By Design" just completed its first series of workshops through Portland Community College.

The Portland start-up is building a system of support services for a different kind of retirement planning. As Program Manager Karen Shimada explains, people today need a lot more than financial planning for retirement, because they are living longer and staying healthier, and they're determined to remain active in their communities. Shimada has been surprised at the age range of participants.

"We're getting people in their 30s and 40s who say, 'Wow, I see my parents going through this right now. I want to learn more about what I need to know, so that I can really be more 'planful' in my older years.'"

Shimada says a common worry voiced in the workshops is not having saved enough money for retirement. She acknowledges it's a very real concern, but one that can be managed.

"Switch your mindset from being afraid of not having enough, to learning about what you do have, and how to maximize that and make choices that will enhance your ability to live your dreams until the very day you die."

Shimada says "Life By Design" has its own future plans, which include an interactive Web site and workshops in other parts of the state, but only after first establishing itself in the Portland area. There are nine major sponsors, including AARP of Oregon. Learn more at www.lifebydesignnw.org.
