Still Time to File for Economic Stimulus in VA

Richmond, VA - Got stimulus? The April 15th "tax day" has come and gone, but for many Virginians, it's not too late to file a tax form and get some money from Uncle Sam. The federal "economic stimulus package" payments will arrive beginning in May, but they'll only be mailed to people who filed their 2007 income tax returns.

Many older and lower-income citizens don't have enough annual income to be required to file income tax returns. They can, however, still can receive an economic stimulus check. To do so, they must fill out and mail a form, which is a simplified version of Form 1040A.

Carolyn Spohrer, of the Virginia Community Action Partnership, says there's a separate deadline for this form, far beyond the normal income tax filing deadline.

"It is our understanding that Social Security recipients and people who aren't legally required to file a return and who haven't filed in years can file for the stimulus payment until October 15th, to still be able to get it in this calendar year."

It will take a little extra effort, Spohrer adds, but the check could mean enough money for food or gas, or to pay off outstanding bills.

"The typical Social Security recipient would receive $300. If you're married and filing jointly, it may be $600. Families with children under age 17, who also claim the child tax credit, are eligible for $300 for each child they claim as a dependent."

Although most of the programs to help people file their income taxes already have shut down for the year, Spohrer says the form is available from the Internal Revenue Service at www.irs.gov or on other Internet sites. Virginia residents may contact Spohrer directly at (804) 644-0417.
