On Earth Day, Report Finds Need for "Broad Protections" in NM
Tuesday, April 22, 2008
Las Cruces, NM - Today is Earth Day, and a new report finds there's a patch of "original earth" right here in New Mexico that's threatened; Broad Canyon near Las Cruces made a national list of ten "Treasures in Trouble."
Nathan Small is with the New Mexico Wilderness Alliance and is a Las Cruces city councilor. He says the area needs to be protected from further damage at the hands of irresponsible off-road vehicle users.
"They even go to the point of driving through those narrow gorges where we've seen negative effects on the petroglyphs."
Small says wildlife has also been affected. He says Broad Canyon should receive federal wilderness protections to safeguard its value to hunters, hikers, tourists, and local people alike.
Mike Matz with the Campaign for America's Wilderness, which released the report, says the slogan "Every Day is Earth Day" is especially relevant when it comes to the need to protect our remaining wilderness.
"We should have the good sense to protect some of these special places to give as a natural legacy to our children and grandchildren."
