OH Business Heads: Opportunity for State in Global Warming Fight

Columbus, OH – Energy and global warming are hot topics in Ohio this week. Sen. George Voinovich will speak at an energy conference today in Columbus; a key topic will be the concern that global warming laws will raise costs for businesses. But on Thursday, a group of economists and business leaders made the case that there's a big economic opportunity for the state. They’re calling for a federal "cap and trade" law, to cut down on global warming pollution and to encourage development of clean energy businesses.

Mark Schuetz, president of Replex Plastics of Mount Vernon, which manufactures mirrors and other plastic products, says his company has an opportunity to use existing technology to manufacture solar energy components.

"This area of advanced energy technologies is going to be one of the big growth industries in the next century. By investing today in product development and market development, we can be one of the winning companies, not one of the people left behind."

He says Ohio's clean energy law, signed Thursday by the governor, is a good step to help develop Ohio's clean energy industry. It makes good business and public policy sense to get into clean energy right away, he urges.

"There is going to come a day when the reality is just too much in everybody's face to ignore, and we want to be prepared for that day."

Neill Lane is CEO of Sunpower, a clean-technology piston manufacturer in Athens. He says Ohio has a lot to gain from efforts to fight global warming, especially in manufacturing components for solar and other clean energy sources.

"Ohio has a tremendous lead in the world. It's sitting there; we can go forward with it, or we can choose to be the losers in addressing climate change."
