VA Grandparents Rally in Washington for Family Care

Washington, D.C. - Raising grandkids isn't part of most Virginians' retirement plans, but it's the reality for a growing number of the state's seniors. Some of those grandparents are headed to a "GrandRally" today in Washington, D.C.

The Rev. Clifford Barnett with Hampton Road's regional task force, A Kincare Connection, is bringing 153 grandparents to the rally to tell Congress they need a little help.

"We want to remind the folks on the Hill that there are silent saviors, people who are working hard to take care of their relatives, and we want Congress and the legislators to understand they need some help. We need help for the children being raised by these relatives."

Spokesman Ed Shelleby with the Children's Defense Fund says one goal of the day-long demonstration is to pass federal legislation making it easier for elders to care for the kids in their extended families.

"The 'Kinship Caregivers Support Act' would bolster federal funding to states so that grandparents and other relative caregivers would have more services. It would also require child welfare agencies to let relatives know when parents lose custody of their children and the kids are about to enter foster care, so that their kin can intervene beforehand."

Nationally, six million kids are being raised in homes headed by grandparents, and even great-grandparents, representing a 33 percent increase over the past decade. Here in Virginia, more than 100,000 kids are under the care of grandparents or other relatives.

"Kinship Caregivers Support" bills are S661 and HR2188.
