Nevada Has a Place in Polar Bear’s Plight

Las Vegas, NV – While you may not ever cross paths with a polar bear in Nevada, what happens in this state can seriously affect the endangered bears. Arizona Senator and Republican presidential candidate John McCain recently broke ranks with President Bush on the issue of global warming, and environmentalists, too, say the White House position on climate change is hurting efforts to protect polar bear habitats.

Andrew Wetzler, with the Natural Resources Defense Council, says decisions in Nevada, such as whether to build new coal-fired power plants, can make a big difference for polar bears and other species.

"Global warming pollution is driven by fossil fuel consumption. It's driven by coal and oil and gas. It's driven by the cars we drive. Until we get hold of that reality, polar bears are going to remain endangered."

Andrea Redmond, an environmental science student at UNLV, says she fears time is running out unless the nation's leaders take action.

"We're not going to be able to have that kind of beauty around us because of what's going on right now. Our leaders are not paying attention to this; they're not taking it seriously and they should be."

Redmond hopes the polar bear will survive for future generations to enjoy.

"I hope they are going to be able to look back and say 'Wow, America really came through. They realized the problem and they fixed it.' That way my kids can see how beautiful these animals are. I just hope that it happens soon."

The Interior Department last week listed the polar bear as Endangered, but said it would be "wholly inappropriate" to use the Endangered Species Act designation as a lever to reduce global warming.
