Clean Lungs, Clean Air - And Some Free Fuel

Johnson Creek, WI - Clean air, clean lungs and some free fuel: The American Lung Association of Wisconsin is marking its 100th anniversary by celebrating the opening of the state's 100th E-85 fuel station. The celebration includes events through the week, focused on the state's air quality improvements.

E-85 is made of 85 percent ethanol and the rest regular gasoline, and the fuel can be used in a growing number of "flex fuel" vehicles. The Lung Association's Dona Wininsky says E-85 is good for Wisconsin air.

"It has much better air quality benefits than traditional gasoline--lower pollutants, lower toxins--and it's just overall better for the environment and better for people to breathe."

Wininsky notes while Wisconsin does not have as many E-85 stations as some surrounding states, the trend is encouraging.

"Minnesota has over 300 stations, Illinois has almost 200, but certainly it's a very big mark for Wisconsin. A couple of years ago we had fewer than 20, so we're making great progress, and we just want to see the growth continue."

She adds the growing number of E-85 stations in Wisconsin is just one of the Lung Association's efforts to improve air quality, which is a key part of the group's mission.

The start-up of the state's 100th E-85 station this week is being celebrated with separate events in Johnson Creek, Menomonie, Madison, Racine and Howard. Festivities include $20 fuel cards going to lucky "flex fuel" vehicle owners who purchase fuel during the events.

Other E-85 stations around the state are also planning events. Complete details can be found at the ALA website, www.lungwi.org.
