Budget Cuts are a “Triple Whammy” for CA Children

Sacramento, CA - Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's revised budget proposal is a "triple whammy" for kids in California who rely on social services. That's according to children's advocates, who say the new budget is even more harmful than the one originally proposed in January.

Saudeka Shabazz with the Children's Defense Fund says the state's poorest families will be hit hardest by the simultaneous effects of the multiple cuts.

"This could cut their Medi-Cal, their food stamps and their cash assistance. And those are three really vital things. We are talking about your access to health coverage, food for your family, and money to pay bills and to help with important things that have to be done in life."

The governor is proposing cuts to Medi-Cal and the Healthy Families program, which Shabazz says would increase the number of uninsured children in California by 70 percent.

Shabazz is encouraging concerned Californians to contact their elected officials about the cuts.

"Those effected are the most vulnerable members of our society, and it's incumbent upon us, as adults and as leaders in society, to make decisions that will protect them."

Schwarzenegger defended his proposal, saying he realizes the cuts are very difficult, but that the state cannot spend money it doesn't have.

The Children's Defense Fund web site, www.cdfca.org, has more information regarding the group's efforts to protect California's children. Additional information regarding the governor's revised budget is available online at gov.ca.gov.
