A Memorial Day Celebration That's 'All Wet'

May 23, 2008

Bernalillo County, NM - Memorial Day is more than a three-day holiday weekend for residents of Pajarito Mesa, near Albuquerque. After an eight-year struggle, ground will finally be broken tomorrow for a new water system in their area. The community is home to approximately 400 families who have been surviving without basic infrastructure.

Sandra Montes, with the Southwest Organizing Project, lives on the mesa. She hopes this milestone will give the community the momentum to achieve all of its goals.

"This big step we have made is just the beginning of an effort to get all the basic services to the community, so we can have a better quality of life. We're going to continue to work toward our next goal, which will be improving our roads, including signs with street names so that emergency services can find us. Also, we are working to bring electricity to the area."

Until now, mesa residents have been trucking in water from several miles away. The ceremony begins at 4:00 PM along Pajarito Road.
