Columbus, OH - If children can't live with their birth families, they do best living with a relative. Today in Washington, D.C., a group of child advocacy organizations is releasing a report that supports previous research on that topic.

Crystal Ward Allen, executive director of the Public Children Services Association of Ohio, hopes the additional findings will encourage more relatives will open their arms and doors.

"We have all sorts of research showing that kids truly function better when they live with a relative in a permanent home as opposed to being in unrelated foster homes."

One hurdle relatives or related families must overcome when adding another member to the household is cost. Newly proposed federal adoption regulations in Senate Bill 3038 would boost the current levels of financial guardianship incentives.

Allen says the proposed increase in federal adoption and guardianship incentive funding could mean a lifelong difference for thousands of Ohio kids.

"This is a really exciting thing because we know that society has changed and more and more relatives are stepping up to take care of kids when their birth families can't."

According to statistics, approximately 3,000 children in Ohio need a permanent home.
