School Summer Vacation in TN: Grass Stains Encouraged

Nashville, TN – Mud pies, nature walks, and outdoor fort-building sound like a lot of fun - and they're the types of activities being encouraged for Tennessee kids as they begin their summer vacations. It's part of a new initiative from the National Wildlife Federation (NWF) to connect more youngsters with nature.

NWF is encouraging parents to help make sure their children spend some time outdoors every day this summer, in the interest of better health. According to NWF Education Director Heather White, research indicates children with attention deficit disorders show that, when they spend time outside, their concentration improves in the classroom. There are benefits for all kids, she adds, especially in light of growing concerns about childhood obesity.

"Not only do you have mental health and academic benefits, you also have the physical benefits of exercise."

This weekend, "National Trails Day" provides a prime opportunity to start the outdoor habit. Look online for related events in Tennessee, at www.americanhiking.org. And White says kids with physical disabilities aren't left out; the state keeps a list of trails and facilities accessible for Tennesseans with disabilities, and there are "boundless playgrounds" in Chattanooga and Kingsport. The list of trails is available online, at www.state.tn.us/environment/parks/accessguide.shtml.

White says today's age of technology gets some of the blame for children who spend half as much time outdoors as they did a generation ago. She says parents have to learn to pull the plug - for their kids, and themselves.

"It's easier for parents to get their stuff done by having their kid right there, watching a DVD, rather than the whole family going outside and playing."

Ideas and tips for making the most of that daily outdoor time are online, at www.GreenHour.org.
