Encouraging Kids to See the Colorado Beyond the Front Porch
Friday, June 6, 2008
Denver – Many children in the state today don't experience the same Colorado in which their parents grew up. New research compiled by the National Wildlife Federation (NWF) says that's because the younger generation is suffering from a serious "nature deficit," spending free time watching television and playing computer games. The NWF is encouraging kids and families to change that, and commit to at least an hour a day outside.
Kevin Coyle, NWF's vice president of education, says children spend half as much time outdoors today, compared to just two decades ago.
"On a Saturday afternoon, you really won't see any kids outdoors. They're all indoors. That's a really new phenomenon."
Heather White, NWF's director of education advocacy, says the technology age gets some of the blame. She says parents have to pull the plug for their kids, and for themselves.
"It's easier for parents to get their stuff done by having their kid right there watching a DVD, rather than the whole family going outside and playing."
White says research has shown children with attention deficit disorders show improved concentration in the classroom when they spend time outside. Plus, there are benefits for all children, especially in this age of concern about childhood obesity.
"Not only do you have mental health and academic benefit, you also have the physical benefit of exercise."
There's a chance to turn the "indoorsy" trend around on Saturday during "National Trails Day," with events planned throughout the state. A list of events is available online at www.americanhiking.org/NTD.aspx.
