Las Vegas, NM - A bill that just passed the U.S. House of Representatives this week could be a big gift to hikers and sportsmen in the Land of Enchantment. It would create the 17,000-acre Sabinoso Wilderness out of currently-inaccessible Bureau of Land Management property near Las Vegas in the northeastern part of New Mexico.

Arturo Sandoval, who testified before Congress on the bill, says it's a big deal for local hunters and cattlemen.

"Because it's been totally surrounded by private land, one of the big things that this bill will do is open it up to hunting and continue the traditional use of grazing."

The bill includes funding to purchase rights-of-way from private landowners to create access to the new wilderness area. The wilderness designation would open the area to the public, but prevent construction of roads or other infrastructure.

Sandoval adds the Sabinoso is rugged, roadless country that's perfect for a wilderness designation.

"Incredibly deep, beautiful limestone canyons, really high mesas, very inaccessible. Really rough, rough country. It's really wild."

The bill, HR 2632, passed the house unanimously.
