St. Paul, MN – For those wishing to dine close to home, state officials say they have the ideal menu. The Minnesota Department of Agriculture has released its yearly "Minnesota Grown Directory," which lists 700 producers who sell directly to the public. Department spokesman Mike Schommer says it's a way to match buyers and sellers.

"The idea is to help local producers and consumers who are looking for fresh vegetables or fruits - whatever is in season at that point - find those products and take them home."

Directory spokesman Paul Hugunin says the reference book is growing in popularity; it has a readership of 185,000.

"One of the real benefits of buying directly from the farmer is that those food dollars stay in the community, where they can work; where they can go back to the school system, and help support local businesses. The farm community is such a valuable part of rural Minnesota that we want to do anything we can to help stimulate business and make it easy for consumers to do business with farmers. Everybody wins."

Minnesota Farmers Union President Doug Peterson praises the directory as a way to support family farms, and provide shoppers with safe and healthful food.

"At a time when there's an emphasis on local food, as well as country-of-origin labeling, we know this food is fresh and safe. Also, the consumer is supporting community agriculture at its very base, with no corporate middleman."

The Farmers Union reports direct farmer-consumer sales are growing by 20 percent per year in Minnesota as consumers demand to know where their food comes from, and who benefits when they buy it.

Produce varies by season, and ranges from organic vegetables and meats to cut flowers and pumpkins, along with nearby farmers markets and orchards. The directory is available online at www.Minnesotagrown.com.
