Looking For Solutions to the Other 'Boom' in CO: Energy Costs

Denver - High utility bills aren't just a winter problem in Colorado. All year long, they can leave many working families in a budget bind. At a national conference on energy affordability and efficiency under way in Denver this week, participants are seeking solutions to the energy crisis.

David Fox, executive director of the National Low-Income Energy Consortium, says many families are still trying to get caught up on past-due winter heating bills. At the same time, they're struggling with record price hikes at gas stations and supermarkets. Some feel they have no choice but to skip meals or trips to the doctor in order to keep lights on in their home, he adds.

"People are not being hit by just a double whammy. It's a triple or quadruple whammy as prices continue to increase. Senior citizens on fixed incomes, low-income families with children, the disabled - they're all in danger of having essential utility services discontinued. Now, that's a life-threatening situation."

It would be easy to point fingers and complain, Fox says, but the goal of the conference is to bring together leaders from all sides of the energy world to analyze the problem without pointing fingers. The Consortium cosponsored the event as an opportunity for people to learn about innovative ideas that have been successful at the local level. As an example, he cites an Oregon program that recycles used or waste oil to raise funds for low-income energy assistance.

"It's 'green,' it helps recycle and, at the same time, it provides money for households in need."

Topics at the conference include energy assistance funding, weatherization, legal assistance and financial coaching for vulnerable families. Former U.S. Senator Gary Hart is among the keynote speakers. The conference began Monday at the Sheraton Denver Hotel and ends Wednesday. Information and the full schedule is available online at www.energyandutilityconference.org.
