ND Health Centers Get Clean Bill of Funding from US House

Washington, DC – The U.S. House has refilled a prescription for healthier communities. At least, that's the view of North Dakota health care center operators about this month's overwhelming vote to approve the "Health Centers Renewal Act." Legislation for the federal program, which must be reauthorized every five years, passed the House with an overwhelming majority. It now heads to the U.S. Senate.

Scot Graff, chief executive officer of the Community Health Care Association of the Dakotas, says federal funding for the program is more critical than ever. The number of people being treated at centers in North Dakota has risen to more than 22,000, and he pins some of the blame squarely on the economy.

"Centers have a growing role, as the numbers of uninsured and underinsured continue to increase."

Currently, the program serves 17 million Americans nationwide, and the legislation would expand the program. According to Graff, 12 percent of patients seen at community health centers in North Dakota are either low-income or have no health insurance.

"I think in both North and South Dakota we would look to this authorization to allow us to expand and continue to serve more patients while cleaning up some of the provisions in the law."

Graff says HR 1343 also would add liability protection for doctors who volunteer at health centers or travel to provide emergency service.
