Portland, OR – This week, Oregon's congressional delegation has introduced two new bills to add acreage and more wild and scenic river designations in the state, on Mt. Hood, in the Oregon Caves National Monument, and in the Rogue River area. Starting this weekend, the conservation group Oregon Wild has organized dozens of hikes and weekend camping trips to introduce Oregonians to many of these special places. They're small-group outings, from easy to challenging in terms of trail conditions, and they're free of charge.

Sean Stevens with Oregon Wild says they work year-round to protect these places, and in the summer, the idea is to share the wealth by getting others out to see them.

"There are hikes for families; we have fishing trips, we have camp-outs, we have wildflower identification hikes. So really, whatever you're interested in, you can go see it, with people that know a lot about the areas where they're leading people."

Stevens says it's a good way to get a closer look at everything from thousand-year-old trees to the Badlands desert, and almost every hike this year is into a proposed wilderness area.

"If people get inspired to really support protections for these places, that's just an added benefit. But really, we're about getting people out to enjoy these places."

This weekend, Stevens says there are nine different hikes from four to seven miles in length. Others are planned through the summer across the state. You can sign up online, at oregonwild.org. The group also holds an annual outdoor photography contest, and reminds hikers to bring their cameras on the trips to get that winning shot.
