Nashua, NH - A Nashua church is putting a bit more green into its little corner of "God's Country." First Church of Nashua has started recycling and energy conservation programs, and shows movies with environmental themes every quarter, to promote "green discussions" in the church community. Shane Zeman, who chairs the Social Justice Committee at the church, says it's all part of faith in an era of change.

"The way that the environment is coming to the forefront is causing people to ask, 'What is an actual steward of the earth, and what are we supposed to be doing?' It leads to looking at ways to reduce our impact on the environment, and try to have a more positive impact on the environment."

Its efforts have been included in a new national report from the Sierra Club, which spotlights ways that religious groups are putting faith into action to help protect the planet. There are examples from each of the 50 states, Washington D.C. and Puerto Rico. In Vermont, the Spirit in Nature Interfaith Path Sanctuary of East Middlebury was selected.

Lyndsay Moseley serves as coordinator of faith partnerships for the Sierra Club, and is a coauthor of the new report. She says the Nashua church understands that serious and lasting social change can only happen when communities of faith lead the way.

"Concrete, physical daily actions that we take in our lives are, not only a product of our values, but also help shape those values, and that back-and-forth helps promote change."

The full report, "Faith in Action," is available online from the Sierra Club Web site, www.sierraclub.org.
