Report: Faith-based Environmental Stewardship a Growing Trend

June 27, 2008

Sterling, VA – Virginia faith groups are going green with God. The Community Lutheran Church in Sterling is highlighted in a new Sierra Club report on the growing trend of faith-based environmental stewardship. The church established what it calls an "Earthkeeping Ministry" because members say their faith guides them to care for all of creation.

Lyndsay Moseley, the faith partnership coordinator for the Sierra Club, points out that the trend is happening not only in Virginia. The report documents the spiritual environmental movement that has been growing nationwide for more than 20 years.

"When folks ask the question 'Is this real?' I think the answer is an unequivocal 'Yes, this is real, at the grassroots level.'"

Report co-author Lyndsay Moseley, also with the Sierra Club, says they know that serious and lasting social change cannot happen without communities of faith leading the way to encourage lifestyle changes.

"Concrete, physical daily actions that we take in our lives are both a product of our values, and also help to shape our values. It's a back-and-forth dynamic that helps promote change."

The Sterling Earthkeeping Ministry maintains a Memorial Garden and a trail for wildlife restoration and environmental education.

The Sierra Club says many members come to environmental activism from a place of faith, with almost half attending worship services at least once a month.
