Thursday, July 3, 2008

Detroit, MI – Michigan's August primary voting is restricted to residents who register by Monday, the 7th. That has dozens of organizations reaching out to potential voters across the state to help them through the process. One of those groups is the Michigan Coalition of Asian and Pacific Islander American Vote. State chair Stephanie Chang says registering is easy, with minimal paperwork to complete. She says the presidential campaigning helps focus awareness on the importance of voting.

"This is a pretty historic election year and people are really, I think more than ever, energized and willing to get involved."

Chang adds for the most part, people she contacts about registering to vote appear to be pleased that someone is taking interest to help them get involved.

"I think people are pretty happy that we're making the process easier and more available and accessible to them."

She says some people her group contacts about registering and voting have been confused about what to do and where, but once informed, they are happy that it's not as difficult as they feared. Even if someone misses the registration deadline for the primary voting, they can still register for the general election in November.
