Nashville, TN – Rising gas and food prices, plus possible cuts in services because of the state's budget shortfall, could be putting many of Tennessee's disabled citizens in a crunch. However, one company is offering a unique way for people with disabilities and their caregivers to earn some extra money. Disaboom, an online community for people touched by disability, is offering jobs to its members through the "Marketplace Opportunity Brokers" program.

Amanda Gagliardi, the program director, describes how it works.

"They can reach out to their community and present the Disaboom marketplace as a way for that business to advertise and to post a listing, much like a yellow pages online listing."

She says about 10 percent of the company's members in Tennessee are signed up for the program, and that the Tennessee membership tends to be more rural -- people who are more likely to feel isolated.

Gagliardi adds that the workers in the "Marketplace Opportunity Brokers" program range from former salespeople to caregivers who had to leave jobs to stay home and look after loved ones. She says response to the program has been so great that they've had to stop taking applications for a time, so they can catch up on training.

"The fact that we can touch their lives on that personal level is really exciting to us, and it's changing our mindset as much as I think it's helping people out there."

Disability advocates are watching companies like Disaboom closely. They note that some people won't be able to participate because of limited computer access.
