Des Moines, IA – Iowa is one of just a few swing states nationwide that could decide who occupies the White House. John Nichols, author and veteran political writer for The Nation magazine will be the keynote speaker at Friday's Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement annual convention in Des Moines. Nichols thinks Iowans hold a share of the keys to the Oval Office.

"I don't see any way that John McCain or Barack Obama can become president of the United States without going straight through Iowa, Wisconsin and Minnesota."

Nichols says Iowa enjoys the spotlight in the months leading up to the caucuses, but he thinks now is the time for the campaign to come full circle and return to Iowa with an October debate that would focus on issues important to Midwesterners.

"Let's make these candidates get off the east and west coasts and come out to the middle of the country and talk to people in the upper Midwest in the fall campaign and have a real debate. I think that would be very healthy."

Nichols says with Iowa so important to either candidate, Iowans shouldn't hesitate to put important issues like health care and election reform before both campaigns and make noise until they get answers. Nichols speaks on Friday at 8 p.m. at the Hotel Fort Des Moines.

Tickets for the event are available by calling Iowa CCI at (515)255-0800 or online, www.iowacci.org.
