"Puertos de California: muevan mercancías pero detengan la contaminación", es la exigencia detrás de la iniciativa SB-974. La idea es mantener la actividad comercial y modernizar la logística marítima, pero a la vez mejorar la calidad del aire cercano a los puertos de California.

Por Los Angeles, Long Beach y Oakland se mueve casi la mitad de la carga marítima del país, y debido a esto su atmósfera sufre una terrible contaminación causada por trenes, barcos y camiones a diesel. La regulación, promovida por el Senador Alan Lowenthal ya fue aprobada por la Asamblea Estatal y se acerca así al escritorio del Gobernador, por lo que pudiera ser firmada en los próximos días.

Esta norma, asegura el Senador Lowenthal, reducirá la polución tóxica que resulta del movimiento de carga desde y hacia estos tres puertos principales.

"En California nos tomamos muy en serio eso de que no somos sólo un centro logístico, sino que iremos de una tecnología del siglo 19 a una tecnología del siglo 21, y lo haremos de una manera que proteja a nuestros ciudadanos y saque muchos de esos camiones de las carreteras."

De acuerdo al California Air Resources Board (Consejo Directivo de Recursos Atmosféricos de California), la contaminación de los puertos produce en el Estado 2 mil cuatrocientas muertes prematuras cada año. El Senador Lowenthal dice que esos números pudieran crecer, y que el tamaño de los problemas está rebasando a los puertos.

"La principal razón de las muertes causadas por partículas es la transportación de bienes. Sí, hay más concentración a medida que te acercas a los puertos y a las autopistas, pero nadie está a salvo."

De ser aprobada la propuesta, se cargaría una cuota de 30 dólares por cada contenedor de embarque. Lo recabado se destinaría a la actualización de la infraestructura para desahogar la congestión.
