Iran War Possibility “Freezes” Chicago Today

July 21, 2008

Chicago, IL - Chicago's Crown Fountain will be a "freeze zone" today. Volunteers cooling off in Millennium Park are going to be signaled to, literally, stop whatever they're doing, and stand as still as statues.

Organizers of the "freeze" say it's a way to call attention to an upcoming Chicago City Council vote on a resolution opposing the possibility of the United States waging war on Iran. Danny Postel, of the No War on Iran Coalition, says Chicago's decision will be heard around the world because of the city's campaign to land the Olympics.

"If the third largest city in the country were to pass a resolution opposing a U.S. attack on Iran, that would send a very powerful signal, not only to Washington, but to the world."

Postel thinks the Chicago City Council is considering a "no war" resolution in order to emphasize that its views are in line with global opinion, much of which is in opposition to U.S. foreign policy.

"Daley is trying to get the Olympics to come to Chicago by claiming that Chicago is a 'global city.' So I think that there is actually a direct connection. We need to be consistent."

Those who oppose the resolution say leaving military options with Iran open is important for protecting Americans. Learn more about the coalition's views and plans online, at www.nowaroniran-chicago.org.
