Pittsburgh, PA - The country's major political parties are in the process of putting together their platforms. Over the weekend, one Pittsburgh woman had the unusual opportunity to bend some ears at the Democratic planning session in Ohio.

Linda Graham is a healthcare professional who has helped her father through a recent spate of health battles. He's a military veteran, but does not have easy access to a V.A. hospital, and Graham says he wound up at a different hospital when he had a heart attack.

When he was released, she discovered he was supposed to take twelve prescription medications - none of which could he pay for.

"I said, 'Listen, we can't go home with these.' And the nurse says, 'Well, why? He needs those medicines.' I said, 'Because he can't afford them. He doesn't have health insurance to do that.'"

Since they were not at a V.A. hospital, Graham explains, they left without the necessary medications. She also has shared the story on a Web site where public input is being gathered for the Republican Party platform.

As a member of SEIU Healthcare Pennsylvania, Graham is convinced that her father's situation is far from unique.

"The United States currently has such a poor healthcare system, and it is a travesty for the nation's veterans. It is imperative that we make a change to improve the system, for all Americans."

She hopes that, by sharing her family's firsthand experience, healthcare reform will be at the top of the party platforms.
