Corre un insistente rumor sobre más recortes al presupuesto de California, ante el déficit que ven venir los legisladores, y los programas de asistencia social se sienten amenazados. Jessica Bartholow, directora de programas de la California Association of Food Banks ("Asociación de Bancos de Alimentos de California") afirma que asociaciones como la suya no podrán brindar sus servicios a la comunidad si dejan de recibir apoyos.

Son tiempos difíciles en California y en todo el país, pero seguir con los recortes no remediará la situación. Tal es la postura de los bancos de alimentos del estado, que luchan contra los aumentos en los precios de combustibles y alimentos, más un fuerte incremento en la demanda de sus servicios, y además la amenaza de más recortes presupuestales.

Con estas medidas, los legisladores buscan resolver el gran déficit que tiene el estado, pero Bartholow asegura que tantos recortes a los programas sociales sólo mandan a más familias a un sistema de ayuda alimentaria ya de por sí flaco, y las organizaciones de asistencia ya están dando su máximo.

"Simplemente no tenemos el margen para hacer más de lo que estamos haciendo."

Ashley White, del Children's Defense Fund ("Fondo para la Defensa de los Niños") dice que enfrentar el hambre infantil debería ser un tema de máxima prioridad a nivel nacional.

"Es una vergüenza que en el país más rico del mundo, el año pasado 12.6 millones de niños vivían en hogares que luchan por vencer el hambre."

En las próximas semanas se dará el proceso de adjudicación, y Bartholow espera que los Senadores en Washington D.C. aumenten los fondos destinados a los bancos alimentarios.
