Wanted: More Minnesota Farmers

Montevideo, MN – If you've always wanted to try your hand at farming, here's your chance. The Land Stewardship Project is offering training sessions in farming for 60 families at three Minnesota locations. Spokeswoman Amy Bacigalupo says farming is a rewarding profession, offering a healthy lifestyle and good economic opportunities. And, she says, this a good time to start.

"There is an incredible demand right now for locally-produced food. People want to know where their food comes from. They understand the cost of shipping food in from other regions. It's unprecedented, and they want to support local producers."

Bacigalupo says, while farming has its ups and downs like any business, it can be very profitable for those who learn how the system works.

"We have about 400 people who have gone through this class in this region so far, and about 60 percent of them have gone on to farm successfully. They're telling us that as a farmer is getting started, keep your input cost low, try to get a cash flow established, and your business can be profitable as soon as possible."

The course includes a series of classes twice per month from October through March, followed by several on-farm educational field seminars. The program will teach financial planning, alternative marketing and innovative production techniques.

Bacigalupo says this is a good time to get into farming, if you "play your cards right."

"I see a lot of opportunity for profitability in, for example, strawberry production, fruit and vegetable production, and livestock production. The interesting thing is, the more integrated a farm can be, not only will it be profitable, but it will carry over times when the markets change. It will be able to weather those changes better."

Farming classes will be held in October in Paynesville, Goodhue and Cloquet. The sign-up deadline is August 28, and scholarships are available. Details online at , and at .
