Fargo ND – Thousands of North Dakotans live miles from the closest hospital, so community health care centers (CHCs) have become a critical part of offering health-related services to the state's uninsured and underinsured residents.

This is "National Health Center Week," and CHCs in North Dakota plan to celebrate their role in providing quality, affordable and accessible medical care to some of the state's most remote areas. Patricia Patron, with the Family Health Care Center in Fargo says the events include a Legislative Forum on Wednesday.

"It's an opportunity to talk to our legislators about access issues and health care services in the state of North Dakota."

A recent study by the National Association of Community Health Care Centers found that CHCs see more than 16 million Americans across the country. In North Dakota, Patron adds, nearly 24,000 patients were cared for in 2007. Almost one-quarter (23 percent) of them were uninsured.

"The issues of the uninsured, or healthcare access in the state of North Dakota, vary depending on where you live. In urban areas, it is definitely more an issue of low-income populations and higher levels of uninsured patients."

Patron describes some features that set CHCs apart from other types of medical facilities: uninsured and under-insured patients are never turned away, and discounts are offered to patients who are insured but have high deductibles.

The August 13 forum, which is open to the public, features state political candidates discussing health care access. It's scheduled from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Family Health Care Center, 306 4th St. North, Fargo.
