Santa Fe, NM – El Gobernador Bill Richardson, junto con otros seis gobernadores del oeste y cuatro premieres canadienses, están poniendo el ejemplo en la manera en que los gobiernos deben enfrentar el problema del cambio climático. Unidos bajo un sistema de colaboración e intercambio llamado Western Climate Initiative (Iniciativa Climática del Oeste), afinan los detalles de éste, que constituye el primer plan regional del país para enfrentar el cambio climático.

Pero a pesar de estos esfuerzos, a los grupos conservacionistas les parece que los mandatarios se acercan al problema, se acercan, pero que les falta llegar al fondo del asunto y llevar su propuesta más lejos. Kent Salazar, de la New Mexico Wildlife Federation (Federación de Vida Silvestre de Nuevo México) afirma que su más reciente boceto del plan todavía se queda corto.

Dice que es excelente que el Gobernador Richardson sea quien conduce los esfuerzos en el tema del clima, pero insiste en que al plan del gobernador todavía le falta en lo que respecta a proteger y restaurar nuestros recursos naturales.

"Una mayor inversión en nuestros recursos. Estamos viendo los efectos en nuestros bosques con el escarabajo del pino, y nuestras corrientes se están secando."

El objetivo del plan es reducir la contaminación y el calentamiento globales, y también impulsar el desarrollo de fuentes para obtener energía más limpia. Para Salazar, es importante que los gobernadores propongan el mejor plan posible, porque podría servir como guía para otros que en el futuro desarrollen proyectos similares.

"Llegará a ser el primer plan global del país que abarque toda la economía, necesitamos establecer un precedente importante."

El grupo de gobernadores dan los últimos toques al plan en las próximas semanas, y aseguran que tomarán en consideración los comentarios de todo el público.
