Iowa Farmers Saving Soil, Environment and Cash

Des Moines, IA – The watchword for Iowa farmers this year has been "rain," and plenty of it. That has made it harder for them to control soil erosion and keep precious nitrogen fertilizer on their crops.

On Friday, at the Practical Farmers of Iowa "Field Day," growers from across the state will meet at Jerry Peckumn's farm near Jefferson to see for themselves how the corn producer has reduced soil erosion and nitrogen loss - while at the same time improving water quality.

Peckumn has managed to do it all through a series of unique environmental practices. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources has done water-quality monitoring on two farms he operates side by side - one using his nitrogen and soil retention practices, and one without them. As Peckumn explains, the results were clear.

"Much lower nitrate, much lower phosphorous. And I don't believe they found any herbicide or insecticides in the water coming off of our farm, either."

He says one of the keys is applying only as much nitrogen as is absolutely necessary, and then keeping a buffer between the field and streams.

"We did it by letting plants grow back along the stream. Trees grow there, and we planted a lot of areas with native prairie species."

In addition to showing off Peckumn's farming techniques, the Field Day event includes presentations by Iowa Agriculture Secretary Bill Northy. He will be on hand for discussions on such topics as the Conservation Security Program, integrating cover crops and using plants for hay production.
