Falcon Heights, MN – State fair-goers will have an opportunity today to learn how to cook from the experts. The Minnesota Cooks Program, sponsored by the Minnesota Farmers Union, features 16 local chefs demonstrating their expertise. Organizer Doug Peterson says they'll use ingredients grown on sustainable farms from across the state, so not only will it be good entertainment, but the program will show the benefits of buying food grown nearby.

"Knowing where your food comes from makes a difference to our economy. If we're buying locally, we're saving energy and, at the same time, we're supporting the people who support us throughout the state of Minnesota."

Peterson says Minnesotans are fortunate to have a variety of locally grown foods available--inexpensive and nutritious--and the food dollars stay close to home.

"In Minnesota, there is food grown by local farmers. It's transported, but not the 1,500 miles that it typically takes for one meal to get to you. Because it's produced locally we know the ingredients, and we know the freshness. We think that's a win-win."

He says buying local is a good way for shoppers to counter those shipping costs and save energy. Another advantage, he adds, is that the product is probably not from a corporate conglomerate--usually it's from a smaller farm operation.

The chefs will put on demonstrations every hour today in Carousel Park. Additional information is available at www.minnesotacooks.org.
