Census Bureau: More Money for Floridian Pockets

Miami, FL – The bottom line looked pretty good for Floridians in 2007. A new Census Bureau report shows personal income was on the rise, poverty was down, and health insurance coverage was up. But tempering the good news on income is that the inflation rate is closing in on six percent this year.

Doug Martin, with the Florida public employees' union AFSCME, says there's not much to cheer about, given the current economic slump and the state cutting its budgets. He believes state tax policy changes during economic good times aren't helping.

"When times were good, they cut the taxes for the Donald Trumps and the Tiger Woods, and now when times are bad, they're not doing anything about the economy."

Tax cut supporters argue that keeping the state budget slim helps control spending.

Ed Shelleby with the Children's Defense Fund says on the health insurance front, fewer people are without coverage because they are tapping into state and federal insurance, and he believes people will need to lean heavier on that option during this economic downturn.

"What we are hoping this next Congress and this next administration will tackle, is a real investment in ensuring that every child has health insurance."

The complete Census Bureau report is online at www.census.gov. More information on the Children’s Defense Fund is available at
