Santa Fe, NM - En Nuevo México parece que la tranquilidad es algo que se desvanece. Información recién publicada esta semana por la Oficina del Censo de los Estados Unidos demuestra un incremento significativo de 2.6% en el número de personas sin seguro médico. Comparado con los números promedio a nivel nacional de 0.5%, el incremento de Nuevo México es bastante dramático.

Ed Shelleby con el Children's Defense Fund (Fondo Para la Defensa de los Niños) dice que existen inversiones que el gobierno estatal y federal pueden hacer en este momento para cambiar y darle la vuelta a esta tendencia. Recalca que la pobreza extrema también está aumentando y no ve que esta situación mejore.

"Esta información ni siquiera refleja lo que en verdad sería un inevitable incremento de pobreza cuando se incluya el receso económico que estamos sintiendo en el presente."

Shelleby espera que estos números ayuden a persuadir a que el Congreso tome acción e invierta en asegurarse que todo niño reciba seguro médico.

"Lo que en verdad necesitamos hacer, especialmente en esta economía de hoy, es asegurarnos de que todas las familias de bajos ingresos puedan proveer un techo y comida en la mesa para sus hijos, así como poder llevarlos al doctor cuando les sea necesario."

También comenta que las prioridades de los gobiernos estatal y federal deben ser bien claras ya que a nivel nacional el número de niños en la pobreza ha incrementado por 500,000 y el número de pobreza extrema ha incrementado por 300,000.
