Labor In The Pulpit: Call For Justice, Dignity For Low-Wage Workers

Memphis, TN – This Labor Day weekend, thousands of congregations around the country will all hear the same message during weekend worship. It's part of "Labor in the Pulpit," and its goal is to work toward justice, fair wages, sustainable benefits and dignity in the workplace.

The Reverend Rebekah Jordan, with the Workers' Interfaith Network in Memphis, says those ideals are held in common across faiths.

"Even when we come from different religious traditions, there is an emphasis on justice for the worker, on the dignity of workers being respected in the workplace."

Jordan says that in Memphis many of the most vulnerable workers have been victims of what she calls "wage theft:" They haven't been paid for work already performed.

"Labor in the Pulpit" also will provide education about the Employee Free Choice Act--proposed legislation that supports workers' efforts to organize. All five of Tennessee's Democratic U.S. Representatives are co-sponsors of that bi-partisan bill, which is awaiting action in the Senate.

Renaye Manley, organizing director with Interfaith Worker Justice, says that measure would help people who want to be union members.

"For many of the workers who are struggling economically, lacking representation, the passage of the Employee Free Choice Act could make it easier to choose to join a union."

Low-wage worker advocates also teamed up with the Government Accountability Office earlier this summer at a congressional hearing. They demanded enforcement of the Fair Labor Standards Act, which governs hours and wages.
