“Red” Means Giving Blood at GOP Convention

St. Paul, MN – The Oregon Republican delegation is at the Republican National Convention in Minnesota – and so far, it's been a much different event than what they expected.

Oregon delegates rolled up their sleeves on Monday – literally - to give blood to the Red Cross. It's certainly not what they'd planned for their first day at the Convention, but the official events had been scaled back because of the situation on the the Gulf Coast.

State G.O.P. chairman Vance Day says only necessary convention business has been done so far, though he believes the pace will pick up.

"We want the focus to be on the Gulf Coast today, as it should be, and getting relief efforts there. Then, we'll warm up to convention, and we'll have a good time – but today's not the day to do that."

Despite speculation over the weekend that the convention might be delayed or even suspended, Day says all 57 delegates, alternates and staffers made it to St. Paul – and he describes them as a real cross-section of the state.

"The Oregon delegation is not monolithic. We've got people from all over the state; from 18 years to 76 years old. I mean, we’ve got all stripes of Republicans, and we just want to make Oregon proud."

Some of the speakers who were scheduled to appear at the convention will still address the crowd, on video. The Oregon delegation is expected to cast 26 votes for John McCain and four for challenger Ron Paul. In all, there are almost 2,400 delegates and more than 2,200 alternates from across the country.
