WA GOP Delegation Waits, Watches, Listens

September 3, 2008

St. Paul, MN – The Washington State delegation has spent a fair amount of time waiting at the Republican National Convention--waiting for updates on convention plans that have changed daily because of Hurricane Gustav. However, the group also has heard some high-profile speakers, including conservative activist Grover Norquist and Meg Whitman, the former CEO of eBay.

Blogger Bryan Bissell is following the Washington delegation, reporting for the Web site PolitickerWA.com. He says they're pleased with the selection of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as John McCain's running mate.

"From what I gather, it tends to be mostly because she's a social conservative, and because she's a fresh face that gives a spark to the ticket--also because they just seem to like her outsider roots."

Bissell has covered both conventions this year. One of the biggest differences he's noticed so far is the number of protesters at the GOP event, and the Washington delegates have indicated some concern about the protests.

"A sandbag was dropped onto a bus that some of the members were on, and they were definitely talking about some of the protesters wearing masks and running around near the buses. That's definitely another thing on people's lips."

Today, the delegation goes to Rossi's Steakhouse in Minneapolis, where they'll hear from gubernatorial hopeful Dino Rossi, who will make his appearance via satellite. Tonight, Sarah Palin headlines the list of convention speakers.
