Bassinet Baby Deaths – Why Isn’t There a Recall?

September 3, 2008

Chicago, IL – A bassinet design flaw is blamed for the deaths of babies, yet the public doesn't learn about the problem for almost a year, and there is no nationwide recall. That's the situation with Simplicity brand bassinets, which are the subject of a consumer alert from the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

Flip Corboy, president of the Illinois Trial Lawyers Association, says an immediate nationwide recall needs to happen to save lives. He blames the CPSC for the delay in notifying the public of the dangers.

"The agency has become very, very pro-business and very, very anti-consumer--even though it's got a name like the Consumer Product Safety Commission. It's filled with bureaucrats."

Corboy says he can see why the Consumer Product Safety Commission is slow to respond to consumer hazards: It has close ties to companies, with many appointed to the agency coming from big business instead of being consumer watchdogs or safety experts.

"It's another example of Corporate America--in this case, hurting families with children at extremely tender ages."

The CPSC says they can't force the company to recall the bassinets, because another company purchased Simplicity and denies responsibility. CPSC is working with several retailers on a voluntary recall now.
