McCain Reaction: Wisconsin "Drills Down" into GOP Energy Proposals

St Paul, MN – All the political speeches are finished in St. Paul, but reaction to the platform outlined by John McCain and Sarah Palin is still rolling in this week. The candidates had plenty to say about energy policy and expanding oil drilling. But Rosemary Wehnes, with the Sierra Club in Milwaukee, says she didn't hear much that would help families in Wisconsin, many of whom are struggling with high gas prices and fewer jobs.

"We send so much money out of our state, to bring in coal and oil. That's not creating jobs here in the state of Wisconsin."

Instead, Wehnes would like to see a greater focus on the renewable energy sources, including wind and biomass. She says Wisconsinites will look to the next Administration to solve the major problems of the economy and the energy crisis, and she believes it can be done using resources that already are available in the state.

"Wind power, solar resources, and improving the efficiency of our buildings - these can put many people to work, right here in Wisconsin."

The GOP plan includes support for renewable energy development, but McCain and Palin have both said their primary push will be to increase drilling in the United States in an effort to bring down gas prices. Wehnes points out that McCain voted against setting a renewable energy standard for the nation. She also notes that, although drilling has increased in recent years, fuel prices have continued to rise.
