PA Republicans Hearing "Centrist" Healthcare-for-All Bill Today

Harrisburg, PA - Republicans in the Pennsylvania House are listening today to plans to provide health care for all Keystone State residents. The GOP caucus is holding a closed hearing on a bill to create a publicly-funded and privately-provided health care system.

Chuck Pennachio, with the advocacy group Health Care for All Pennsylvania, sees the Family and Business Healthcare Security Act (HB 1660) as a "centrist model" that combines ideas from the political left and right.

"Public funding streamlines the administrative costs by about 90 percent, and the private delivery guarantees choice for patients; they can stay with their doctors if they choose, or they can change doctors if they want to."

Pennachio says funding authorization for the program is included in the bill, meaning that it only requires passage by the legislature and the Governor's signature, not a public vote, and he says Governor Ed Rendell, a Democrat, has pledged to sign the bill.

Opponents of the measure say it would be expensive and require tax hikes, but Pennacchio says it's an investment that would save the state and taxpayers money in the long run.

"It's an investment in the health of our citizens, an investment in the business community, so that we can not only retain businesses, but also give them a competitive edge, nationally and globally."

He says a recent poll found more than two-thirds of Pennsylvanians support providing health care for all residents.
