Iowans Go Door-to-Door For Peace

September 18, 2008

Des Moines, IA – They're hoping the movement to bring U.S. troops home from Iraq starts with a knock on your door. On Saturday, hundreds of Iowans will will go house-to-house to help kick off a nationwide effort to get at least one million signatures on a petition, urging Congress to bring American forces home within a year.

Sue Dinsdale, an organizer with the Iowa Citizens Action Network, says this neighborhood-based effort is unique. In Iowa, she says, there will be volunteers from communities both large and small across the state.

"This will be educational, and also I'm hoping to activate people who want to end the war but haven't really had an opportunity to do anything so far. I've had folks from little towns, from organizations everywhere, calling and writing in."

Instead of bringing tens of thousands of people together for one protest, Dinsdale explains, this weekend's goal is one-on-one public education to influence members of Congress. More information about the event is available online, at www.milliondoorsforpeace.org.
