Rural Vote in Battlegrounds like Iowa Could be Closer than 2004

Des Moines, IA – Republican John McCain leads Democrat Barack Obama among rural voters in 13 battleground states, including Iowa, but the race margin is narrower than in 2004, according to a survey taken just before the financial meltdown on Wall Street last week.

The Center for Rural Strategies report says numbers among strictly rural voters are almost unchanged from May, with Sen. McCain still leading. However, Sen. Obama is closer to him than the Democratic and Republican candidates were at the comparable point in the last presidential race.

Neil Ritchie with the League of Rural Voters says this survey shows how important rural voters are to both campaigns.

"There is a significant opportunity for them to address the issues rural voters care about. They need to take some time and spend some effort communicating with rural voters, because it's a huge part of the electorate."

He adds that issues vital to rural voters are in line with the concerns of voters everywhere.

"The economy was at the top of voters' minds, followed closely by the prices of energy and gasoline. The war in Iraq and health care costs were the third- and fourth-highest priorities. "

The economic concerns of rural voters may be more intense now, Ritchie says, after the federal bail-out of major Wall Street institutions last week. The League of Rural Voters plans to do a third rural survey before Election Day.

The poll results are online at www.ruralstrategies.org.
