New York, NY — There are risks and opportunities for older New Yorkers in the current economic turmoil, as new reports from AARP find Americans over 50 own more than a quarter of the homes now in foreclosure or delinquency.

Chaunda Ball with AARP New York says the federal bailout plan should include bankruptcy protection for seniors.

"These provisions would actually help all homeowners, not just those who are currently in foreclosure, but the protections could actually help stabilize home values, protect our communities and also help put the economy back on the path to recovery."

The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts one in three U.S. workers will be age 50 or over by the year 2016. Lynette Chappell-Williams with Cornell's Office of Workforce Diversity says the University works hard to both recruit older workers and offers programs designed to keep them.

"Older workers provide a level of expertise that's beneficial, as well as a historical knowledge that contribute to what we are doing now."

Treasury Secretary Paulson told lawmakers to "avoid slowing down" the bailout plan "with provisions that don't have broad support." The troubling financial news could send more older New Yorkers into the job market, but the good news is Cornell University and the YMCA of Rochester ranked near the top in the AARP "Best Employers for Workers over 50."
