AZ Immigration Meeting: “Enemies” Meet Face to Face

October 14, 2008

Phoenix, AZ – Arizonans are working to find common ground in the immigration debate. In a meeting this week at the downtown campus of Arizona State University, those who favor deportation of undocumented immigrants met with others who are working to find a pathway to citizenship for those already in the country.

The goal of the meeting was to discover where both sides might find areas of agreement. Annie Lloyd, founder of Voices for Civil Dialogue, helped organize the meeting in Phoenix and says now is the time for working together on the issue.

"The debate has been mired down. We are committed to creating a framework in which solutions can be created."

Lloyd says meetings such as this provide all those involved a chance to learn about the concerns of those impacted by immigration reform and each other.

"It's teaching people, just by them having the opportunity to meet each other, that there is more in common than there is different."

The meeting this week is the first in a series designed to bring different ideas and views to the discussion. Lloyd says businesses and health care providers are also participating in the dialog, in efforts to create comprehensive immigration reform for the country.
