Poll Shows What Montanans Want

Billings, MT – "What Montanans want" is clear. A new poll on energy issues shows a majority of 600 likely voters surveyed want more development of wind, solar, biodiesel and geothermal power. They also would require utility companies to use more renewable energy, and a majority want any new coal plants to capture polluting carbon dioxide.

Theresa Keaveny is with the Montana Conservation Voters Education Fund, one of the groups that released the poll.

"Montanans are concerned about jobs and the economy, concerned about energy prices. And they know, and believe, that renewable energy should be state government's highest energy priority."

Six conservation groups paid for the poll, which was conducted by a national survey company. Other findings show strong support for planning and zoning to protect the state's quality of life, and more than 80 percent say coal-bed methane wastewater should be cleaned up before being discharged.

Keaveny adds that 69 percent said they want companies to produce and use cleaner sources of energy, such as wind and solar, in order to limit greenhouse gas emissions.

"This is a statement that people want to see more production here to wean ourselves from foreign oil, and also because it's more sustainable and affordable."

Twenty-two percent did not agree with requiring companies to make those changes. The questions were asked a month ago.

Conducted by AmericanViewpoint, the poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percent. Full results are available at www.mtvotersedfund.org. Other groups involved in releasing the report are Montana Audubon, Northern Plains Resource Council, the Sonoran Institute, Montana Smart Growth Coalition and the Sierra Club.
