Richmond, VA - Just four days remain to apply for an absentee ballot in Virginia; the deadline to get an application form to your local voter registration office is Tuesday. Vicki Williams, the absentee voting and voting education coordinator for the state Board of Elections, says an absentee voter must be registered and must offer one of 17 acceptable reasons for voting absentee, which most applicants do.

"You've got to be outside your locality or have a particular issue which causes you to be unable to go to the polls. I believe that Virginia's law pretty much covers all possible situations."

Williams says it's also not too late for deployed military or other overseas voters to get hold of absentee ballots.

"Virginia does permit their ballots to be transmitted to them via e-mail. They still must mail the ballot back, but at least one barrier of time is removed."

One reason that does not qualify for an absentee ballot is that a voter simply does not feel like going to the polls in person. Mailed absentee ballots must be received by election day, so Williams recommends putting them in the mail as soon as possible after they are received. Virginians can also vote early by casting absentee ballots in person, until
November 1.
