Going Door to Door to Clear Up CO Ballot Confusion

Denver, CO - It's a last minute rush to knock on doors and clear up confusion over Colorado's lengthy ballot this year. A coalition of Colorado non-profits will be going door to door through Election Day to encourage people to vote, and talk with voters about the long list of ballot questions they'll be facing in the polling booth this year.

Rosalie Bouck is one of the organizers heading up the canvassing effort; she says lots of voters have been confused by the language in a few of the amendments.

"In many cases, people think the amendments would do the opposite of what they actually do - a lot of what we're trying to do is clear that up for people."

She cites as examples Amendments 47, 49 and 54 that many voters they've spoken with believe to support worker's rights and freedom of choice, as claimed by the measures' supporters. In reality, the issues involved are far more complicated, with many arguing that the amendments would significantly weaken the rights of workers.

Bouck adds that many voters are overwhelmed by the length of Colorado's ballot, which is one of the longest in the country this year.

"There's a lot of contradictory things being said. People are very confused; they're very confused about what this is and where it's coming from and why."

Bouck points to Amendment 46, the so-called "Civil Rights Initiative," which has been bankrolled largely by out-of-state interests to ban consideration of race, gender or ethnicity in a wide range of areas from colleges to health care programs. Opponents claim it would actually roll back years of civil rights progress, and they call the campaign supporting it deceptive.
