Fighting Back Against Election Day Trickery in PA

November 4, 2008

Philadelphia, PA - Pennsylvania voters need to stay on guard against election tricks. Mary Boyle with Common Cause says deceptive flyers are showing up around Pennsylvania communities that contain misinformation and scare tactics designed to keep people away from the polls today. She warns that the flyers often look convincing; some are even printed on official-looking letterhead. But she says not to believe anything you see or hear about penalties for voting, or changes to Election Day.

"Voters should not believe it if they are told that their polling place has changed or that they are not allowed to vote today. Anyone that has voting questions or concerns can call the national Election Protection hotline at 1-866-OUR-VOTE."

There have been reports of fliers being circulated around parts of Philadelphia, and elsewhere, containing false information, such as that Republicans vote today, while Democrats should go to the polls Wednesday.

Common Cause has responded to the voter suppression campaign with a robocall to Pennsylvania voters featuring the voice of Danny Glover telling voters not to fall for the dirty tricks. The Glover call has been made to 325,000 households in affected areas in Pennsylvania and Virginia.
