Huron, SD - Ag groups, including the South Dakota Farmers Union, are optimistic about agricultural policy under the upcoming Obama administration. South Dakota Farmers Union president Doug Sombke is hopeful that wind energy and bio-fuel development will become a major priority.

"Wind energy definitely needs to be developed because South Dakota is light years behind other states, especially legislatively. We need legislation that will support the industry. As far as ethanol and other renewable fuels, we need a stimulus package in this country that wouldn't only support ethanol, but would also stimulate the farm economy and relieve a lot of the consumer fears about higher fuel prices."

Sombke is optimistic times will get better, but admits the weak economy is inflicting pain on rural America. He's hopeful the new administration will work for positive changes in agriculture, including trade agreements.

"We’re going to have more credibility across the world. I think this current administration has shown a lack of leadership when it comes to dealing with other foreign countries on such issues and just bowed down to too many multi-national companies and their interests. Now, it’s time to work for the real working man and the blue collar worker like the farmers and ranchers and laborers of this country."

TheFarmers Union reports serious disagreements between Congress and the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture over portions of the 2008 Farm Bill, including rules for mandatory country of origin labeling. The organization is hopeful President-elect Obama's personal support of the farm bill will mean better implementation of the law to reflect the intent of Congress.
